    坐落于上海膠州路的URBN酒店最早為中國帶來了“碳中性”的概念。所謂碳中性，即是酒店消耗的全部能量，包括員工通勤、食品和飲料遞送以及客人使用的各種能量，都被記錄并累積計(jì)算的排放放量；之后，酒店將通過投資于中國的綠色能源發(fā)展和減少排放項(xiàng)目，以購買積分來中和其碳的排放量。酒店客人也可選擇通過購買碳積分，來抵消他們飛行中的碳排放。比如，從北京坐飛機(jī)到上海，通過計(jì)算，所消耗的碳排放折合為25元人民幣，酒店代客人將這25元投資到內(nèi)蒙古某處的林場，來年，在內(nèi)蒙古就會多出一顆用來碳補(bǔ)償?shù)臉淞恕?br />     酒店是由1970年的一個(gè)郵局改造而來，內(nèi)部多采用舊材料循環(huán)再利用。在外部窗外設(shè)計(jì)了一個(gè)花園，有參天大樹和室外花園咖啡吧。外觀設(shè)計(jì)里的竹竿則取自己種的竹林。進(jìn)入酒店，大堂背景墻是由許多舊皮箱拼接形成，時(shí)髦且富有個(gè)性。個(gè)性的走廊墻壁其實(shí)就是由舊磚切片貼成，隔斷墻也是瓦片經(jīng)過設(shè)計(jì)后的累積，整體效果卻是很棒。酒店的餐廳，循環(huán)再利用的綠色個(gè)性的裝飾隨處可見。客房室內(nèi)柜子和地板都由回收木材制成，上面刷了環(huán)保漆。
    設(shè)計(jì)師在URBN的設(shè)計(jì)中加入了眾多環(huán)保元素，除了四處回收舊地板、舊磚來做地面和墻面的裝飾，VRBN還把房間定義為了“不穿鞋區(qū)”，因此免去了地毯，減少了洗滌劑帶來的污染。此外，酒店業(yè)把浴缸從淋浴房“解放”出來，從而避免客人對水的浪費(fèi)。另外，低能耗的各種電器、環(huán)保油漆、雙層玻璃燈綠色元素隨處可見。
    URBN的客房設(shè)計(jì)徹底打破了一般酒店的“標(biāo)準(zhǔn)間”概念，沉降式的沙發(fā)休閑區(qū)算得上是一種創(chuàng)新，圍成一圈的長沙發(fā)可以輕松容納十人以上。寬大低矮的雙人床并沒有靠墻放置，而是面對自然光擺放，四周留出了過道。跌宕起伏的線條讓空間有了層次感，燈光的設(shè)計(jì)豐富而柔和。
    事實(shí)上，像VRBN這樣富有個(gè)性、講究酒店獨(dú)特VI設(shè)計(jì)感，標(biāo)榜量身定制的貼心服務(wù)的酒店已經(jīng)遍布?xì)W洲，但在中國還是新興事物。因?yàn)樵诂F(xiàn)價(jià)段，中國大多是依靠奢華品比如名牌和五星酒店的知名度來標(biāo)榜自己的生活質(zhì)量，所以環(huán)保酒店通常不是“生意人”或注重名聲的人的選擇。在社會發(fā)展中，中國很需要這種設(shè)計(jì)，前衛(wèi)時(shí)髦有個(gè)性，看似豪華，但卻是用最少環(huán)保的材料裝修而成。簡約但有檔次的環(huán)保設(shè)計(jì)才能滿足中國消費(fèi)者的享受需求，又能同時(shí)達(dá)到環(huán)保的效果。
    國內(nèi)首家推行“碳積分”購買政策的“碳中性”環(huán)保酒店CRBN落戶上海。據(jù)介紹，該酒店一共有26個(gè)房間，通常一位來自美國西岸的顧客到酒店住宿，如果主動購買“碳積分”的話，需要支付的費(fèi)用僅為數(shù)十元人民幣，相對于酒店1000~3000元一晚的住宿費(fèi)來說，似乎微不足道。然而，由于購買“碳積分”這一服務(wù)并不是強(qiáng)制性的，所以酒店開業(yè)至今，還沒有客人主動掏錢購買。
    對此，VRBN酒店有關(guān)負(fù)責(zé)人分析：“購買‘碳積分’的客人之所以少的主要原因，一方面是‘碳積分’環(huán)保理念在公眾中知曉度還不高，另一方面是入住的多為商務(wù)客，行程安排較勁。一些客人在前臺可能只花費(fèi)幾分鐘時(shí)間，退房手續(xù)辦好后就馬上離開了，工作人員可能也來不及詳細(xì)講解相關(guān)的服務(wù)。”
    由于環(huán)保型酒店在公眾中的知曉度仍較低，多數(shù)人出行時(shí)仍選擇上午型酒店。據(jù)一項(xiàng)針對環(huán)保型酒店的調(diào)查顯示，幾乎所有被調(diào)查者對環(huán)保理念都表示支持，其中大部分人表示會考慮在上午、旅游時(shí)選擇環(huán)保型酒店，但是，多數(shù)人對環(huán)保型酒店的概念依然不清晰。
    在國外，類似以環(huán)保為理念的酒店也在逐步推行，如美國加利福尼亞州修建的GAIA酒店，這是世界上第一家被正式承認(rèn)的黃金級環(huán)保建筑，而另一家較知名的Kandala—ma環(huán)保酒店則隱藏于斯里蘭卡的森林深處......但是，打出“碳中性”招牌的酒店在全世界卻屈指可數(shù)。
    有關(guān)專家表示，“碳中性”作為一種新興的酒店服務(wù)形式，其所推廣的環(huán)保理念在公眾中的知曉度和認(rèn)同均不高，加上這類酒店的價(jià)格相對于一般酒店更加昂貴，因此要讓多數(shù)人認(rèn)同這一理念還需要一個(gè)較長的過程。
